Siesta Key, FL

We just got back from a short weekend in Siesta Key for a friend's 30th.  She and her husband had booked the Bay Breeze house at Banana Bay Club, Waterside Villages, for a group of us.  The house sits on the Heron Lagoon and next to the community pool.  There are kayaks and canoes available for guests as well as a dock with chaise lounges over the water.  Bay Breeze is somewhat outdated and worn, but it's a vacation rental so you can't expect perfection.  The hubs and I slept on the pull-out couch, which was not particularly comfortable.  The house itself sleeps 8 comfortably and has a stocked kitchen with utensils and cooking- and baking-ware.  You will need to bring your own beach towels.  Next time we stay in Siesta Key, I'm going to look for other lodging options.  http://www.bananabayclub.com/

We ate dinner at the Boatyard Waterfront Bar & Grill and sat in the inside patio area.  The band was located near us, and it was so loud that the group of 10 couldn't hear ourselves speaking.  When the band was on break, we could carry on a conversation.  The atmosphere of the restaurant itself was great - right on the water, indoor and outdoor seating available.  The prices were to be expected for a touristy area, but $3.25 for a fountain drink seemed a little high to me.  The food was only so-so.  So, in summary, great location, not-so-great food.

Siesta Key is a relaxing little town with powdery white beaches.  Very laid-back and beautiful island.

Boston, MA

I have always wanted to visit Boston and Salem, so we FINALLY made it happen this August.  Visiting at the end of August, doing a lot of the tourist-y stuff during the week is definitely the way to go.  The crowds were low Wednesday, Thursday, and most of Friday (the beginning of the Labor Day weekend). Hotel We stayed at the Boston Marriott at Long Wharf .  It’s not a cheap place to stay, but the location is fantastic if you are here to see the historical places in Boston.  It’s across the street from Quincy Market/Faneuil Hall and next to the New England aquarium and harbor cruises.  The Blue Line from the airport drops off at the hotel, as well as all of the tour trolley stops.  Walking into the North End/Little Italy is also very easy. Food I don’t even know where to start here, so I guess I’ll go chronologically.  I knew that I wanted 1) a lobster roll, 2) clam chowder, and 3) cannoli.  Check, check, and check!  Note, for Wednesday - Fri...

Carnival Valor - Eastern Caribbean

Had a great dinner in the Steakhouse on the first night as expected, and the service staff were amazing as usual throughout the entire cruise.  We went to four ports, but since I don't have much to say about Nassau, I'm not including it here. Here are a few tips about Valor: Cabin 6373 and the two on either side are right above where the band plays in the casino.  The room is super loud.  Be sure not to book near this area. Cabin 7440 is a corner room with a huge wrap-around deck just large enough for 20 or so people to hang out.  The Aft pool, Prometheus, is adults only and right next to the pizzaria. The Serenity deck is in the front of the boat and only has jacuzzis, no pool. Port Rundown: St. Thomas - Sapphire Beach Hopped a cab (JR AKA the "Road Runner" was our driver - he was great) and road out to Sapphire Beach - about 30 minutes or so.  Cost is $10pp one-way.  We took our snorkeling gear with us, rented a chaise ($7), and ordered...

Celebrity Solstice - Dawes Glacier, Alaska

If you've ever booked a cruise during the pandemic, you know how frustrating it can be.  In 2019, we booked our Alaska cruise for May 2021. Well, May 2022 was our make-up cruise for the cancelled 2021 sailing.  Better late than never, right? Dawes Glacier - Endicott Arm Pre-cruise First, I’ll hit our pre-cruise stay in Seattle.  We hailed a Lyft from the airport ($50 + tip).  You need to cross the sky bridge and go down one level until you see the green barriers.  The signage was actually great, but several escalators to get there were on the fritz.  Our Lyft dropped us at the Fairfield Inn & Suites near the Space Needle.  The hotel seems newly updated and the front desk staff were very friendly and helpful. For dinner, we took the advice of the front desk staff and visited Thomas Street Warehouse .  The prices are actually really great for downtown, and they have a cool cocktail menu.  In the morning, we grabbed breakfast tacos at Jack’s...
