St. Augustine, FL

The highlights of St. Augustine (in my opinion) are:
  • Fort Matanzas - recommend paying for admission into the fort and taking your time walking around.  It really is a neat, historical place.
  • The Dow Museum of Historic Houses is one of my favorite places.  It's a walking tour through 200 year-old homes and sites, and each house has its own story and displays.  Plan for about an hour or so, and it's easy walking distance from downtown's main parking garage (by the fort).
  • The Fountain of Youth is overrated.  Very disappointing.
  • Old City House Inn's restaurant is fantastic.  Quite pricey, but well worth it.  Just thinking about the brie makes me drool! http://oldcityhouse.com/restaurant/
  • We usually stay in the Double Tree off of I-4 and drive in for the day.
  • If you go during July 4th (we made that mistake one year), it's HOT, humid, and VERY crowded.  Take a picnic, some chairs or a blanket, and grab your spot for the fireworks next to the fort.

Boston, MA

I have always wanted to visit Boston and Salem, so we FINALLY made it happen this August.  Visiting at the end of August, doing a lot of the tourist-y stuff during the week is definitely the way to go.  The crowds were low Wednesday, Thursday, and most of Friday (the beginning of the Labor Day weekend). Hotel We stayed at the Boston Marriott at Long Wharf .  It’s not a cheap place to stay, but the location is fantastic if you are here to see the historical places in Boston.  It’s across the street from Quincy Market/Faneuil Hall and next to the New England aquarium and harbor cruises.  The Blue Line from the airport drops off at the hotel, as well as all of the tour trolley stops.  Walking into the North End/Little Italy is also very easy. Food I don’t even know where to start here, so I guess I’ll go chronologically.  I knew that I wanted 1) a lobster roll, 2) clam chowder, and 3) cannoli.  Check, check, and check!  Note, for Wednesday - Fri...

Carnival Valor - Eastern Caribbean

Had a great dinner in the Steakhouse on the first night as expected, and the service staff were amazing as usual throughout the entire cruise.  We went to four ports, but since I don't have much to say about Nassau, I'm not including it here. Here are a few tips about Valor: Cabin 6373 and the two on either side are right above where the band plays in the casino.  The room is super loud.  Be sure not to book near this area. Cabin 7440 is a corner room with a huge wrap-around deck just large enough for 20 or so people to hang out.  The Aft pool, Prometheus, is adults only and right next to the pizzaria. The Serenity deck is in the front of the boat and only has jacuzzis, no pool. Port Rundown: St. Thomas - Sapphire Beach Hopped a cab (JR AKA the "Road Runner" was our driver - he was great) and road out to Sapphire Beach - about 30 minutes or so.  Cost is $10pp one-way.  We took our snorkeling gear with us, rented a chaise ($7), and ordered...

Celebrity Solstice - Dawes Glacier, Alaska

If you've ever booked a cruise during the pandemic, you know how frustrating it can be.  In 2019, we booked our Alaska cruise for May 2021. Well, May 2022 was our make-up cruise for the cancelled 2021 sailing.  Better late than never, right? Dawes Glacier - Endicott Arm Pre-cruise First, I’ll hit our pre-cruise stay in Seattle.  We hailed a Lyft from the airport ($50 + tip).  You need to cross the sky bridge and go down one level until you see the green barriers.  The signage was actually great, but several escalators to get there were on the fritz.  Our Lyft dropped us at the Fairfield Inn & Suites near the Space Needle.  The hotel seems newly updated and the front desk staff were very friendly and helpful. For dinner, we took the advice of the front desk staff and visited Thomas Street Warehouse .  The prices are actually really great for downtown, and they have a cool cocktail menu.  In the morning, we grabbed breakfast tacos at Jack’s...
